About me

My name is Coty Murphy and I am currently in graduate school at Winthrop University working to obtain my Master of Social Work. I have always had a passion for helping others so choosing a career in social work felt like a natural choice. I spent the first four years of my career working with the special needs population where I had the opportunity to specialize in providing services for people with pervasive developmental disorders. My career began with a position as a therapist for children with autism where I was able to learn and implement behavioral intervention programs that led to increased skills in communication and social skills. I then transitioned to a case management role where I was coordinating care rather than directly providing services to clients. I am still in a case management role but now I coordinate medical care for people living with HIV/AIDS; the HIV/AIDS epidemic is disproportionately affecting communities of color and I am working to provide sexual health education to minorities to reduce the risk of transmission. As a social worker, I specialize in empowering others to reach their goals while advocating for the underserved members in our community. Social justice and advocacy are at the core of my profession and I strive to make a difference in the work that I do whether that is from working directly with people or in developing and evaluating programs. I hope to continue working in the community to help make a difference where I can assist to provide opportunities for the youth to grow and learn.
